History of Horror

Horror is a genre of film that aims to create a sense of fear, panic, alarm, and dread for the audience. These films are often unsettling and rely on scaring the audience through a portrayal of their worst fears and nightmares. Horror films usually centre on the arrival of an evil force, person, or event. Many Horror films include mythical creatures such as ghosts, vampires, and zombies. Traditionally, Horror films incorporate a large amount of violence and gore into the plot. Though it has its own style, Horror film often overlaps into Fantasy, Thriller, and Science-Fiction genres.

Gothic fiction, which now is a subtopic of horror is a combination of literature and film that combines horror, death and sometimes romance. Gothic horror dates back very far and originated roughly in the second half of the 18th century. A few famous gothic writers include Mary Shelly, Bram Stoker and of course Edgar Allan Poe. Gothic fiction, often is a pleasing sort of terror often referring to medieval buildings, formed from Gothic architecture which is mainly the setting of these stories.
