Test audience feedback and alterations

Questions

1.Does our opening scene suit the genre that we have chosen, being horror?

2.Where there any issues with the continuity?

3.What age rating would you give this film?

4.Was the cinematography successfully shot well for this opening scene?

5.What would you rate this opening scene considering Mise en Scene, Cinematography, Sound, Editing and Performance?

6.Do you feel the sound was well suited to the genre?

Feedback:

To the following questions

1. All of the people that gave feedback felt that the opening scene of the shooting was well suited to the genre.
- It was intense with the heartbeat and the heavy breathing
- The sound was very effective

2. The majority of the answers for this was no. This was the answer that we were looking for seeing as the opening scene is a montage and not one successful go at shooting.

3. Through out the viewers of this film opening, there was a balanced response of the film either being at an age rating of 15 or 18 which is very appropriate for the genre that we are trying to shoot.

4. On the whole the cinematography was shot well. There was one issue that was picked up on from a few of the audience members. That was in the montage there was a shot of a man putting on a glove, and in the next scene he is seen walking away after dropping the plyers, however without any gloves on.
Other feedback consisted of the scream being too loud, there not being enough close ups, and a shaky forest shot, and the font is too small/not appropriate for the sizing.

5. The majority said 7/10

6. All of the people giving feedback felt the sound was fitted well and appropriate.

Through receiving this feedback, we took the comments into consideration and changed the following from some of our scenes:
- we made the font bigger so that the white stood out more against certain backgrounds
- we sped up the forest shot so that is was less shaky, but more effective
- we lightened some of the scenes because they looked a bit too dark
- we decreased the volume of the scream

Fake blood

When thinking of the props, that suited our story line, we felt that as the girls have been kidnapped and their teeth were being taken out, it would be relevant to involve blood. However, a lot of the fake blood that is traditionally make, does not actually look right, either being to bright red, or the wrong shade of red, or being too runny in the liquid. The fluid of the liquid needed to be solid enough for it to be realistic. This, when we came to a conclusion as a group, meant that we would have to make some fake blood our selves, so we were satisfied enough that it would look realistic.
To start off, I researched ways in which fake blood could be make using everyday substances, or that we could easily get our hands on.

Ingredients or checklist:

A pan
A kettle
Plain flour
Red food colouring
Cocoa Powder
A wooden spoon

The example that we followed and slightly altered was as follows:

1. Put a pan onto the stove and heat up, with boiling water inside.

2. Add flour, depending on how much mixture you want to make, if a lot, then use about 5 heaped spoons of plain flour.

3. Mix the flour and the water in the pan until it is all mixed in as one solution and there are not too many different clumps, as this would make it look fake.

4. After, and depending on the shade of red, slowly add the red food colouring into the mix, constantly stirring. If it is a bright red you will not be needing a lot otherwise it will look light the wrong colour and be too light.

5. When you feel their is a decent amount, then add cocoa powder, to make the fake blood darker. Real blood is actually quite dark, and always darker then blood.

6. Keep adding red if the mix is too dark. If the mix is too light, then keep adding in sections more cocoa powder.

Makeup and clothing

Makeup of the girls

Each of these girls are used as victims, and have been in captivity for a while. The girls, are meant to have been kidnapped, and the filming is done weeks after the incident. This means that the girls would need to0 have signs showing of wearing away (clothing if used ). They have also been victimised which means that they would need to be presented as exhausted and have bruises if they were abused.

In order to get the effect of this we did the steps, in the following order:

1. The base layer of the face was very pale foundation, paler than their natural skin tone to add the effect that they are ill, make have been starved and have had a lack of being able to take care and look after themselves with little facilities.

2. Areas of the face that needed to look exhausted and tired, such as under the eyes to create eye bags, we used a slightly darker foundation/concealer, to show a more clear effect and difference over the face.

3. Around the eye, different shades of purple, browns, reds and oranges were blended, light up until the darker colours to show bruises as if they were black eyes. We felt that to create the best effect for this, little was more and that we were probably better off having light bruising rather then over doing it and it looking unrealistic.

4. Some of the areas of the face, when the light was shone onto them showed a shiny and reflective look over the face and this made it look obvious that there was the use of makeup involved. In order to get rid of this problem, we covered it in a light powder that got rid of any shiny looks. However nearer the scalp, we though that it would look good to leave it a bit to make it loom like grease from the lack of being able to wash and clean.

5. The last feature that we did was to put a big of m
ascara onto the the models eyelashes. However instead of making it all neat, I clumped the lashes together, and when it was dry, rubbed them together leaving some of the mascara to brush off and flake onto the models face. This gives the effect that she has been crying a lot.

Costume for the Bandaged model

1. The model, wore a plain white bando, and black leggings. This meant, with the light use of colour for the bando, when covered with bandages, it would make it easier for the colour to be covered and there was less surface area to cover with a thickness of bandages. To make sure that we has a good base layer, we used white toilet roll to wrap Ami's body in. This made the body look lighter under the bandages as well. We resulted in using toilet roll also to ensure that the cost of the bandages were not too high especially seeing as we were limited, with a small budget.

2. To make sure that all of the models hair was back, we tied it into a plait and then put it back into a swimming hat so that all of it was tied securely back. The hair being slick back meant that it was easier to handle and manage especially as the model had long hair.

3. To hold all of the toilet roll together seeing as it is delicate, we decided not to use sellotape, seeing as it would be shiny,. Instead we dampened white dressing and this stuck, and held it well together.

4. Over the top of this layer, we put on rolls of bandage. This gave the scene a more scary look and warning, that supported our theme of horror.

5. When filming, the last feature that we added was the fake blood that we made to ensure that it fitted the theme of the girls having their teeth ripped out of their mouth.

The makeup for the other girls that are featured is also the same.

The girls did not need a costume. They wore vests and pulled them down, to make it look as if they had their clothes taken off them.

Final sound

For our media montage and opening scene, when filming our experimental sound, we decided that the quality of the recording and the theme of the words were appropriate, fully relating to the context and the style we were aiming to achieve.

We chose the following the lyrics as they relate to our narrative:

VERSE 1

Hush little baby don't you dare
daddy will give you a good nightmare
and if that nightmare doesn't work
daddy will give you a true stern word
and if those stern words don't work out
daddy will make you scream and shout

INTERPLAY WORDS
Shhhhhhh... daddy wont like that
STOP he's coming

VERSE 2

Hush little baby don't you worry
daddy will be there in a hurry
and if he doesn't see you there
you will get tied to the chair

INTERPLAY WORDS
Shhhhhhh... daddy wont like that

*huming*

VERSE 3
Humming the tune of our lullaby

VERSE
'la la' to the tune of ou lullaby
